I’ve got fond memories associated with the 10th of Muharram. I’m not a child anymore (TEENAGERS ARE NOT CHILDREN! How dare you think otherwise?) but I’ll definitely be rocking my 5 year old impersonation when the junk food comes out. Regardless of the fact that we would’ve just broken our fasts with a different ‘favourite’ foodstuff chosen by each person in my family (So what if there are 7 of us? Get on our level, gurl).
Nabi (S.A.W) said: “One who generously spends on his family on the day of ‘Ashura, Allah will increase (his provision) for the whole year.” (Baihaqi)
That’s only a tip of the iceberg (Thread carefully. Let’s not pull a Titanic). Another narration states that whoever clothes a naked person, Allah will release him from a painful punishment. Whoever feeds a hungry person or gives water to a thirsty man, Allah will feed him a feast from Paradise and will quench his thirst with Salsabil (a wine that does not intoxicate).
Mu’awiyah (R.A) relates: I heard Nabi (S.A.W) say: “It is the day of ‘Ashura. Allah has not made fasting obligatory for you. But I am fasting. He who likes to observe fast among you should do so, and he who likes not to observe it, does not have to observe it.” [Sahih Muslim]
Therein lies the importance of fasting, not only on the 10th of Muharram, but either on the 9th or 11th as well. In short, one has two choices; fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram (correlating with the 23rd and 24th of October) or fast on the 10th and 11th of Muharram (which correlates with the 24th and 25th of October).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (R.A) relates that when the Prophet (S.A.W) said: “If I survive till next year, I will definitely observe fast on the 9th of Muharram (as well).” [Sahih Muslim]
Fasting only on the Day of ‘Ashura is Makrooh, as it emulates the Jews. For them, it is a form of remembering Musa (A.S). Remember, Musa (A.S) was given the Torah by Allah. Hence, we fast on two days, to distinguish ourselves from the Yahud.
For us, it’s a Day known to be full of blessings and lessons. Besides the virtues told to us by Allah via our Nabi (S.A.W), many Prophetic events are mentioned to have occurred/will occur on the 10th of Muharram.
It was on this day that the Skies, Earth and the Lauw-e-Qalam came into existence. It was on this day that Hazrat Adam (A.S) and Hazrat Hawa (A.S) were created. Sayyidina Adam (A.S) was forgiven on the 10th after his exile from Paradise. Allah saved Sayyidina Nuh (A.S) and his companions in the ark. Allah extinguished the fire in which Sayyidina Ibrahim (A.S) was thrown into. Allah granted victory to Musa (A.S) and split the sea for him and for the children of Israel, thereby defeating Fir’aun. On this same day, Sayyidina Ayyub (A.S) was restored to health (from leprosy). Sayyidina Yusuf (A.S) was reunited with his father Ya’qub (A.S). Sayyidina Yunus (A.S) was removed from the belly of the fish. ‘Ashura is also the day when Sayyidina Dawud (A.S) was forgiven. The kingdom of Sulaiman (A.S) was restored. Sayyidina Isa (A.S) was raised to Jannah. Hazrat Husayn (R.A), the Prophet’s (S.A.W)’s grandson, achieved the honour of Martyrdom. And on this day, Yaumul-Qiyamat will occur.
Remember, you take one step step towards Allah, Allah takes ten steps towards you.
May Allah protect us all and grant us the ability to overcome our Nafs.
Love and Duas,
